Victorian Heritage Festival
WHEN: Friday, Saturday and Sunday - November 4, 5 and 6, 2011
WHERE: Jim Thorpe, PA (Carbon County PA)
DESCRIPTION: Wow! Do we have a cool weekend for you! Fun at a Victorian Heritage Festival? You bet!
Who wouldn’t enjoy discovering fascinating stories about a town that once was one of the most popular tourist
destinations in America, and second only to Niagara Falls? Do you love superbly designed, 19th century
architecture? How about a carriage ride around town among a potpourri of Victorian mansions carefully and
beautifully restored, located in this charming “Brigadoon” nestled into the folds of the Western Pocono Mountains?
In addition, you might consider following it up by taking a pleasant stroll with one of our tour guides in order to
learn more about both the ins and outs of our classic homes and buildings.
You could enjoy high tea at the Albright Mansion, or a glass of wine as you tour the gorgeous Harry
Packer Mansion. Did I mention he presentation of how Victorians lived their lives presented by none other than our
local raconteur, Mr. John Gunsser? Perhaps, you’ll want to join others in a scavenger hunt throughout the historic
district. It’s a chance to check out many of our shops, art galleries and meet their keepers. Be nice, and you
might get help from them in your search & find frenzy. Yes! There are wonderful prizes!!
Do you like it when people save an old historic structure from demolition and dedicate themselves
to its restoration? Then you will want to tour the Kemmerer Carriage House still standing on the grounds of the
lovely former Kemmerer Estate tucked into a hillside overlooking the Lehigh River. Our guides will give you the
scoop on this partially restored historic attraction. Hey, this tour is on us! But we wouldn’t refuse a small
donation (or even a large one for that matter).
Perhaps, you’ll decide to ask all your friends to come and watch the famous historic figures of Old
Mauch Chunk, the coal and iron giants who were the movers and shakers of the Industrial Revolution, as they exit
from the train downtown with great fanfare. See them dressed in their full Victorian garb as they are welcomed back
home after their 150 plus year hiatus. Hear a short story from each character. Listen to the brass band fill the
autumn air in Josiah White Park with their renditions of John Philip Sousa and more. Hear the Victorian songsters
with their skits and vocal selections. Attend a lively performance by The Eckley Players in the park. Ssh! Rumors
are flying that they are also conspiring to make a bold visit to the Victorian Ball on Saturday evening to
dramatically state their case on behalf of all the miners and working people who were literally the backbones of
the gilded age. There are photo ops for you everywhere!
